About the Training Course

Asana Training Course

This course is inspired and blessed by Tiwariji, Paul’s direct teacher and one of the few living knowledgeable authorities on Pranayama and its place in the field of yoga today. It is a living tradition. Paul has learnt the full practice in a special one-to-one capacity over the past 14+ years with Tiwariji. Tiwariji learnt directly from his teacher, Swami Kuvalayananda, who was an adept and highly accomplished in Pranayama and the science of yoga. He was also a devotee and spent his years in practice and training with his teacher, Madhavadas, on the banks of the Narmada river, also being taught this exact practice of Pranayama. In this way it has been passed on very personally and effectively. Such a tradition survives all books as it is only experience that ultimately counts.

Over the years of study and introspection with Tiwariji and in this practice Paul has had the opportunity to better understand it from direct experience and how to help pass it on and help others to practice and teach it better. This course is designed to help you practice more effectively, understand Pranayama techniques to a deeper degree based on the information given and the depth of practice being done in a purpose-built dedicated environment. Based on this you can improve as a practitioner and teacher. This course does not claim to develop Pranayama teachers but rather to stimulate and increase the base and understanding of practice.

Part One was covered in 2013.This course continues with Part Two and will cover a synthesis of practice, techniques, physiology and philosophy as follows. Deeper topics will be covered in Part Three in 2015. It aims to combine traditional practice and wisdom with scientific and psychological understanding.

  1. Part One recap on how to Sit, Breathe, and Practice Pranayama
  2. The Small Details in the Pranayama practice
  3. Tapas and Pranayama
  4. The Energetic Body and its Influence in Pranayama
  5. Nadi Shodhana through Breath and Shatkarma Kriyas
  6. Preparations for Pranayama and the Release of Tension
  7. The Importance of Kapalabhati
  8. Obstacles to Growth through Yoga
  9. Elements for Success in Dedicated (Yoga) Practice
  10. Some Scientific Findings Relating to Pranayama, the Breath, and Yoga
  11. How to Continue and Grow Your Practice

The key focus is on your practice and gaining experience.

The morning session will be devoted to a 90-minute Pranayama practice and a tripartite 30-minute sitting meditation.

This will be followed by Asana practice. If your practice is other than Ashtanga you are still welcome. If you do not have a dedicated Asana practice then we will teach you the basics of the Ashtanga method.

The afternoon will focus on Pranayama practice along with Pranava and Mantra recitation to help still the mental activity and enable a shift in the autonomic nervous system thereby enabling one to get more internally connected, really touch something inside that leads to real transformation. Within this time will be the lecture focus for the day coupled with your questions and answers to the best of our ability.

In the evening will be a mixture of personal time, related videos, further practice and chanting. Typically Paul is not present for the evening programs but one of the team leads them.

Through repeated practice and greater understanding it can grow within. Pranayama is a true gift and holds a power to really transform one’s state and behavior if practiced with faith and dedication over time. This program is dedicated to encourage that in you. It is recommended you continue into the next two-week program with Tiwariji and Paul to further your pranayama practice.

Paul Paul Dallaghan VDO Bio Paul is a well-known world-class yogi, scientist and teacher with 30 years of experience in the practice and study of yoga, the breath, and the meditative techniques. His dedication to the path of yoga has come from a combination of intense practices, meditative experiences, silent retreats and numerous pilgrimages in India, Tibet and Thailand. He was one of the dedicated few to put in many years with Pattabhi Jois in the old days of ashtanga vinyasa, certified by him, with an expertise in asana. Further, his dedication to the practice of pranayama for over 20 years leaves him in a unique position as the senior student to carry forth these teachings from his teacher O.P. Tiwari and the tradition of Swami Kuvalayananda and Sri Madhavadas. In addition, he was accepted into one of the top PhD programs in the U.S. to conduct scientific research on yoga and its effects. He is still a student and loves to share and learn. Sincerity, not seriousness, is the key to enjoying this path of yoga and meditation. Right balance in teacher, friend, entertainer and sharer of wisdom. He opened our eyes to a new world . . . giving us hope for a safe and healthy journey ahead.
∼ Kirsten, Hong Kong, 2013

I learned an incredible amount from Paul. He is very inspiring. I could have spent hours listening to him discuss philosophy, pranayama and asana. He was very funny too!
∼ Kate, UK 2013

Paul is a teacher and guide. He makes yoga accessible to everyone, and he is also entertaining :-)
∼ Nada, Egypt, 2013

Paul’s knowledge, experience and presence is phenomenal, and his communication style and approachability were wonderful.
∼ Anne, Nepal, 2013

It exceeded my expectations. It was great to learn from Paul and really appreciate him sharing his knowledge about pranayama and help me to improve my practice. Also the performances and singing of/with Jack Harrison were great!
∼ Guest, January 2013

I was doing my meditation and holding you in gratitude this morning, so dropping you a line. I did a drop in to a workshop last night, to take a look see, and for the first time that i can ever remember, i looked at the clock wondering, when this idiot would release me and stop wasting my time, (the only time i have ever looked at the clock with you, is when i need the bathroom and wondering if i can hold it, because i really dont want to miss anything!!!), and i remembered something you said the very first time i met you, you had been talking about starting Retreat, and that you and jutima, wanted to create a space of “authentic yoga”, so now i wanted to thank you both for doing just that. For the “clean and clear”, for not hooking into the mainstream because it is easier, for always giving me a foundation and strength to maintain an “authentic” practice, and for always keeping and holding the authentic corner, where we can come to you and be in the essence of pure yoga, and for your protection, i realised last night how much you protect us from the idiots and impurity that is out there, through you guidance and through the lessons of discernment that you have offered and somehow along the line i have imbibed.
∼ Vanessa

Paul and all the teachers are not only knowledgable but are also very giving, I learned so much. Food was really yummy. General Manager is a nice guy, he knows his stuff. Truly appreciate everything.
∼ Yvonne C

Dear Paul,
I’m sorry that I didn’t get a chance to say this to you in person before you left, but I sincerely wanted to thank-you for all your time, effort and expertise that you offered during the past 3 weeks of workshops you held at Samahita Retreat. You have truly created an environment that is so easy to completely focus on yoga and how it relates to more than just the asanas. And I really enjoyed your down-to-earth approach and explanations. Personally, this experience was exactly what I needed and I feel so inspired to continue to learn more and grow in my practice – However, I must admit that it feels a little daunting to do so in conjunction with work, and in my very tiny village where no one else practices – but I’m optimistic. (If you ever post a sound recording of one of your lead classes, can you please let me know?). I do wish I could have stayed longer and I hope to return in the near future if I can save enough money again. I really just wanted to say that I truly respect and appreciate what you have dedicated yourself to and shared with others.

Again, Thank-you.

Kindest Regards,
∼ Sarah

Dear Paul,
We left Samahita Retreat very early the last day, but my parents, brother and I wanted to thank you very much for the delightful moments we have spent in your retreat. Everything was so well organised, your team so professional but so kind also. The place is a real paradise and peace sanctuary.

We are looking forward already to come back.

Sincerely yours,
∼ Helene TYACK, Maryvonne TYACK, Roger TYACK, Fabrice TYACK

Paul, I didn’t get a chance to say thank you for our amazing month at Yoga Thailand. I learned so much, both about yoga and myself. The pranayama is relatively new to me, but so helpful and strengthening – I already feel and difference and will continue my practice on and off the ship.

Thanks again for your time and help. Safe travels!
∼ Becky

Dear Paul and staff of Samahita Retreat,
Just a quick note of thanks for the wonderful 3 days I spent at your centre last week. It was truly restful and rejuvenating and just what I needed. I only wish I could have stayed longer. I was also appreciative to have the attention of teacher trainers to support me with my asanas.

Many thanks again and all the best,
∼ Holly, Switzerland
