Advanced Yoga Teacher Training:

Pranayama, Kriyas, and Classical Text

July 16 – 29, 2017

Sri O. P. Tiwari and Paul Dallaghan

accompanied by live music with Daphne Tse

This program is not for students new to pranayama. If new it is best to take the course with Paul on July 2-15, which is more technical and will explain how to practice. Either after that, or those continuing their practice of pranayama or looking to get back into it having learnt it previously, will find this program with Tiwariji and Paul most beneficial, covering the art and joy of practice. This is a unique opportunity to learn direct with Tiwariji, the world’s leading authority and practitioner on pranayama. If you would like to receive the Yoga Alliance certification please fill in the application form.

About the Training

tiwari-online-2016-photo-about

This training is focused on the practice of pranayama and will this year offer to those so interested the further practice of kriyas. For most this means getting into the other dhautis and basti. Various options for asana practice are also offered. The afternoon lecture sessions will focus on Gorakhnath’s Siddha siddhantapadhati followed by open discussion and Q&A.

Gorakhnath is considered the preeminent hatha yogi, supposed to have lived about 1,000 years ago, the famed disciple of the great yogi master Matsyendranath. A few texts are attributed to Gorakhnath. This current rendition of his classic on the body and its secrets is recently published in English by Kaivalyadham philosophico-literary department. It is considered to be the only English translation available. This text goes into great detail on events and happenings in the body, seen esoterically, but sure to fascinate anyone with a modern understanding of physiology.

The text is more of a manual than a work of philosophy. It helps the student, through the teacher, navigate the way and understand practice, its process, and eventual transformations resulting from practice. The Hatha approach has tantric origins but exists as a method appropriate for both those of us living in the world with jobs and families as well as for someone secluded and devoted to practice in an ashram or monastery. Many of the descriptions are relevant to an advanced practitioner and this is why a teacher is needed to explain what is meant by each verse so it can be better understood by you, the student, at different levels of development.

Hatha and the body, explained well here, is a practical approach, initially using the body but ultimately the mental faculties, to experiencing growth and development into the realm of meditation and eventual liberation. The steps of hatha are offered as the method to develop awareness and experience true meditation. Work on the body and breath are integral to this through asanas, kriyas (cleansing techniques), kumbhakas (the various pranayama techniques) and mudras (a combination of asana and kumbhaka). At their culmination comes a change, a shift, so unique that the individual is transformed.

It is a rare opportunity today to experience a clear and practical explanation of such often obscure and esoteric lines by an experienced yogi for us in real and practical language to enhance both our practice and learning. In short, Tiwariji won’t be around forever so make the most to learn.

Sri O.P. Tiwari

Yoga training teacher, Sri O.P. Tiwari Sri O.P. Tiwari (Tiwariji) has dedicated his life to the practice and teaching of yoga. For the past almost fifty years he has been head of The Kaivalyadham, a yogic research institute near Bombay, India. Established by his master, Swami Kuvalayananda, in 1924, the institute has been a pioneer in scientific research related to yoga.

Tiwariji was taught in depth by his master, and he accomplished all the practices. This puts him in the rare position of having practical experience as well as deep philosophical and scientific understanding. He is one of the few remaining masters of Pranayama in the world today.

He wears no badge, waves no flag, and is not interested in propagating his name. He joins us here to pass on the teachings to those sincerely interested. Besides these sessions, he remains in private practice in India, quiet and humble.

Paul is one of three senior students of Tiwariji. He is honored to host his teacher every year, and as a result share this knowledge and experience with many others. Paul will lead the asana portion and assist Tiwariji in all the Pranayama practices, pulse observations and philosophy sessions.

Paul Dallaghan

(Available during specific Retreats and Trainings only)

Paul Paul Dallaghan VDO Bio Paul is a senior teacher of Pranayama, Asana and the meditative art and science of Yoga. He has been a dedicated student since the late 1990s of both Sri O.P.Tiwari, one of the few remaining classical yogis and masters of Pranayama, and the late Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in ashtanga vinyasa. Both of these great teachers have personally certified Paul in these practices, a unique position as the only one to receive this double honor. Paul continues with Mantra practice from the yoga lineage and meditative approaches, influenced by the Thai Forest tradition. This combination of practice and study through dedication and devotion has helped him gain some understanding of practice and to apply this appropriately in Asana, Pranayama, Mantra recitation and Meditation for the different level of students he has the privilege to share the teaching with. He continues his studies in health, philosophy, anatomy and physiology. Paul is also conducting PhD research on the yoga practices at Emory University in Atlanta, USA. One of his main gifts is to be able to relate the teachings in a very down-to-earth way for the modern seeker. He does not take life or yoga too seriously and as a result the discussions and philosophical sessions are lively and humorous, helping to explain the meaning behind the practices and philosophy.

Paul is the happy father of two lovely boys and the founder of Centered Yoga and Samahita Retreat. For more please see his full bio.

Paul,
I was doing my meditation and holding you in gratitude this morning, so dropping you a line. I did a drop in to a workshop last night, to take a look see, and for the first time that i can ever remember, i looked at the clock wondering, when this idiot would release me and stop wasting my time, (the only time i have ever looked at the clock with you, is when i need the bathroom and wondering if i can hold it, because i really dont want to miss anything!!!), and i remembered something you said the very first time i met you, you had been talking about starting Retreat, and that you and jutima, wanted to create a space of “authentic yoga”, so now i wanted to thank you both for doing just that. For the “clean and clear”, for not hooking into the mainstream because it is easier, for always giving me a foundation and strength to maintain an “authentic” practice, and for always keeping and holding the authentic corner, where we can come to you and be in the essence of pure yoga, and for your protection, i realised last night how much you protect us from the idiots and impurity that is out there, through you guidance and through the lessons of discernment that you have offered and somehow along the line i have imbibed.
∼ Vanessa

Paul and all the teachers are not only knowledgable but are also very giving, I learned so much. Food was really yummy. General Manager is a nice guy, he knows his stuff. Truly appreciate everything.

Dear Paul,
I’m sorry that I didn’t get a chance to say this to you in person before you left, but I sincerely wanted to thank-you for all your time, effort and expertise that you offered during the past 3 weeks of workshops you held at Samahita Retreat. You have truly created an environment that is so easy to completely focus on yoga and how it relates to more than just the asanas. And I really enjoyed your down-to-earth approach and explanations. Personally, this experience was exactly what I needed and I feel so inspired to continue to learn more and grow in my practice – However, I must admit that it feels a little daunting to do so in conjunction with work, and in my very tiny village where no one else practices – but I’m optimistic. (If you ever post a sound recording of one of your lead classes, can you please let me know?). I do wish I could have stayed longer and I hope to return in the near future if I can save enough money again. I really just wanted to say that I truly respect and appreciate what you have dedicated yourself to and shared with others.
Again, Thank-you.
Kindest Regards,
∼ Sarah

Dear Paul,
We left Samahita Retreat very early the last day, but my parents, brother and I wanted to thank you very much for the delightful moments we have spent in your retreat. Everything was so well organised, your team so professional but so kind also. The place is a real paradise and peace sanctuary.
We are looking forward already to come back.
Sincerely yours,
∼ Helene TYACK, Maryvonne TYACK, Roger TYACK, Fabrice TYACK

Paul, I didn’t get a chance to say thank you for our amazing month at Yoga Thailand. I learned so much, both about yoga and myself. The pranayama is relatively new to me, but so helpful and strengthening – I already feel and difference and will continue my practice on and off the ship.
Thanks again for your time and help. Safe travels!
∼ Becky

Dear Paul and staff of Samahita Retreat,
Just a quick note of thanks for the wonderful 3 days I spent at your centre last week. It was truly restful and rejuvenating and just what I needed. I only wish I could have stayed longer. I was also appreciative to have the attention of teacher trainers to support me with my asanas.
Many thanks again and all the best,
∼ Holly, Switzerland
