Three tips to start your day off right

By Summer Dien

What you do first thing in the morning is what will set the tone for your entire day.

When you first open your eyes in the morning, what is your first thought? Is it, “Ugh, oh my god, I don’t want to get up…Not another day…I don’t want to go to work” Or is it, “Today is going to be a beautiful day. I have a good feeling about today.”

When you first wake up, train your mind to think positively.

You need to decide that the day will go well and then it will. You have to decide that you will like today, before it happens. Happiness is a choice we make. Our thoughts are so powerful and they create our whole world. Whatever you think, whether positive or negative, it will happen. So please be careful and keep your thoughts positive.

When you are about to get out of bed, put both feet on the floor, then stand up. Having both feet on the floor will give you a sense of grounding and balance. You are on even footing now. Ready to take on the day!

Go to the bathroom and scrape your tongue. Use a tongue scraper in the morning and if possible, after every meal. The tongue is a good indicator of overall health. If the tongue has a white or yellow coating, you might be sick or accumulating toxins. A healthy tongue is pinkish. Some benefits of tongue scraping are: it prevents bad breath, removes bacteria and toxins, improves your taste buds, and promotes oral and digestive health.

Try to have a bowel movement everyday, preferably first thing in the morning, before a pranayama and/or asana practice. Your systems of intake, assimilation and elimination should all be in good working condition. If you are not absorbing nutrients from the food you eat or if you are not eliminating waste in a timely manner then you might need to seek professional health. A healthy body releases waste daily. When one is

constipated, the body holds onto the waste, and it will start to reabsorb those toxins after a couple days, which is unhealthy and uncomfortable. Try to let go and release.

Here are some things you can try to help stimulate a bowel movement: uddiyana kriya or nauli kriya, an enema, or drinking hot water with lemon.

The body loves routine. When you wake up, do your practice, and eat at the same time, the body will get into a nice rhythm. Once this happens, everything will flow better. If your life doesn’t work like this, then at least try to keep your morning routine the same. The routine will give the body and mind a sense of grounding which helps promote more inner peace and calm.

Join me at Samahita Retreat December 10-17 where we will learn and develop a pranayama and asana practice that you can take with you back into your daily life. Beginners, couples, and families with children are very welcome.
