“Yoga shala,” in Sanskrit, denotes the room or practice area where yogic practices take place. Many of the old yogic texts, in particular Hatha yoga ones, offer guidelines on how to design such a structure. Taking into account old wisdom and modern knowledge, we have built our shala. It is the central feature of Samahita Retreat and the hub of all activity
We have created next to our yoga shala a garden for quiet contemplation, fire ceremony and other ritual practices, as well as meditation sessions.
Herbal Steam Room
Close to the pool and with windows looking out to the beach is our herbal steam room, which uses a combination of thirty Thai herbs, plants, and spices gathered locally on Samui.
Beachside Swimming Pool
Right by the beach is our swimming pool, which has plenty of sun beds and a large shallow area for children. In keeping with our efforts to stay as close to nature as possible, it is a saltwater pool, which is easier on your eyes, hair, skin, and internal organs than chlorinated water.

Kids Club and Babysitting
Family life is an integral part of the yogic path. Many great yoga masters, present and past, have had families. As parents ourselves, we know firsthand the challenges that face practitioners who have children, and we are well aware of their special needs.
Samahita Retreat sits directly on the beach, just steps away from calm, warm water ideal for swimming (though when the tide is low during the summer months, you might prefer to take long swims in our saltwater swimming pool). We are fortunate to have a virtually private beach.
Samahita Wellness offers a number of wellness programs for detoxification, general health and well-being.
Next to our dining area is a beachside lounge opening wide onto the beach, with panoramic views and gentle sea breezes (unless the wind is up, then it’s positively cool!). This area is equipped with a full-size screen for video presentations and movies, a library, and plenty of cushions. We’ll gladly connect your Ipod to the sound system if you want to share your sounds (within reason, of course). An offshoot from it is an extended private shala at the water’s edge.
You’ll know you’re in the tropics, at the beach, and enjoying your time.
