About the Retreat

There are many wonderful stories in the yogic traditions from India of people seeking truth and meaning. This icon of the hero overcoming obstacles and thereby conquering darkness is a beautiful metaphor for how each of us feels when we face the many challenges and obstacles presented by our daily lives.

This retreat will draw inspiration from many different sources within the spiritual traditions of India, such as the Bhagavad Gita, Upanishads, Buddhist sutras and Yoga sutras to help us find echoes of the seeker within and present us with practices to help us find our way.

Morning practice will be Mysore style Ashtanga. Afternoon sessions will include detailed meditation, talks on spiritual text in the non-dual traditions, asana workshops on inner alignment and the use of subtle bandhas, as well as spontaneous talks on living in today’s complex world.


About the Teacher

Richard Freeman Michael was born in Cape Town, South Africa. He has studied yoga with many prominent teachers in the Krishnamacharya lineages, focusing on Iyengar and Ashtanga. He is authorized to teach Ashtanga by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois of Mysore India and currently studies with Richard Freeman.

Michael spent time in monasteries in Asia and America studying meditation, and that forms the foundation of his teachings on yoga and its integration into our daily lives.

With an eye for detail and alignment, Michael conducts workshops throughout the world emphasizing the internal practice of yoga in his teaching. He teaches in English.


The Daily Schedule

The program begins at 5pm on the first day of the retreat with a group welcome and departure is at 12pm on the last day.
The schedule is subject to change at the discretion of the teacher.

Deluxe One Bedroom Suite

We only have two deluxe one bedroom suites located in our most private building closest to the sea. They have a private bedroom, living room, fully equipped kitchen, generous bathroom and an extra large balcony. Both suites offer a modern open living room with sofa bed, LCD TV, working desk and DVD/ iPod Stereo. They are perfect for a family or couple. The additional rate is a flat rate based on the room and is added on to the total rate package whether a single individual, couple or family.

Deluxe One Bedroom Suite - Additional cost on the total program package:

"I joined my first Yoga Retreat at Samahita on Koh Samui in April 2013 and was totally fascinated. Located on a wonderful beach stripe and isolated from mainstream tourism it´s an ideal place to practise the yoga spirit - especially when surrounded by only friendly people with same aim. Having done some yoga before but not particular Ashtanga, I was nervous if this was the right approach. But Michael led the class in a way that everyone was concentrated on their one practice and the different levels of participants did not bother at all. The Mysore class early in the morning was a new experience for me as I normally hate getting up early, but on this tropical island it turned to be the impressive moment of the day. The afternoon class was a great opportunity to address any questions regarding postures and movements of the asanas and Michael took a lot of time to explain details of postures to move deep into the asanas without risking injuries. Joining a retreat or a workshop provides definitely more time and opportunities to discuss issues extensively than during daily life with short breaks at the yoga studio - I will always recommend to do that if possible."
