Guest Yoga Teacher Programs

We are happy and privileged to be able to host visiting teachers who are experts in the field of yoga. Over the years we have developed relationships with them-sometimes teaching alongside them; other times studying under them. There is much to learn from these individuals, highly regarded teachers who, notably, remain humble and always grounded.

These guests have dedicated their lives to learning through practice and direct experience, and they come to Samahita Retreat to share their knowledge, as well as to encourage a growth within you through their yoga programs.

We also host guests who specialize in health, natural healing, prenatal yoga, and more.

A Special Mention…

Our senior teacher, Sri. O.P. Tiwari, joins us every year. To learn under him is a rare privilege, as he is one of the few remaining masters of Pranayama. He teaches very few other programs today and none in the format done here.

Richard Freeman is a masterful teacher and practitioner, and it is an honor to have him as part of our visiting faculty. We regard him as an inspiring force, and consider his training courses to be in a class of their own.

January 10 - 24, 2016 Samasthitihi in Every Pose with Chuck Miller

Samasthitihi in Every Pose

We have the method; the practice is to bring the method to Life!
We must fill in the blanks with our own experience, use what we feel in this moment, adjusting the practice to our present condition. And we must do this for a lifetime.

Together we can explore how to gather the wisdom that enables us to trust our inner voice. We can learn to let that inner voice guide us through the ever-changing Sea of Samsara. Halahala! Into the Sea of Amrita Bindhu! The “Nectar of Immortality!” The transformation from Moha to Shantieh . . . Peace!

Why not! If we can loosen our grip on our current Beliefs, “empty our cups” and show up ready to learn, we can do it! Little by Little!

February 28 – March 6, 2016 Building & Deepening a Practice with Integrity with Rachel Grey

Building & Deepening a Practice with Integrity

Together we will explore yoga as a physical practice and how to incorporate yoga into life, aiming for a more holistic approach in order to gain insight into ourselves and the world around us.

If you have an existing Mysore practice there will be a chance to practice Mysore on a daily basis. And we will support you in deepening your practice by filling any gaps in its foundation, thereby strengthening and enhancing the more advanced aspects of practice as well.

However, if you are just beginning yoga we will give you a solid grounding to start you off safely and with integrity, and you will leave with a self practice. Yoga Therapy will be used as needed with the Ashtanga Vinyasa as a way to work towards the full practice smoothly, at your own pace.

The mornings will focus on the meditative practice including pranayama meditation, as well as some walking and sitting at the beach to connect with nature and the beauty of the beach. The afternoons will be an opportunity to clear up any misunderstandings that arise through theory, workshop and Q & A sessions. And we will end with a deeply relaxing restorative style class.

A Two Week Retreat for Experienced Students

In the mornings we will practice Ashtanga Vinyasa in an internal, contemplative and adaptive manner as a means of discovering how its dialectical approach produces a natural avenue into pranayama and meditation. Detailed attention will be placed on the form and quality of the poses which are being strung upon the thread of the breath. Asana and Pranayama both will be examined as a conjunction and interplay of opposite patterns and movements in structural alignment and in internal breathing. Our practice will watch even the ideas, moods, emotions that arise and fall. Seeing this will allow us adapt the series and movements to our situation, thereby preventing injury, healing injury and arriving at a state optimal for meditation and pranayama practice. This approach can work well for both the beginner and the advanced practitioner.

July 30 – August 6, 2016 Ashtanga & Vinyasa Yoga in Paradise with Matt Champoux & Sara Hess

Ashtanga & Vinyasa Yoga in Paradise

In our daily yoga practice, we are confronted with the many layers of struggle that postures can create physically and emotionally. How can we discipline ourselves to channel those conflicts, “energy blocks,” into a healthy focus that moves us to a place of receptivity, ease and openness throughout our being?

By coupling the traditions of Ashtanga yoga and alignment based Vinyasa yoga, we will explore methods for opening the body through approaching some of the most challenging postures of hatha yoga, known as the granthis (or knots, like Kurmasana or Mariciyasana D and deep backbends). By uniting the potent methods of inquiry offered by combining these schools of yoga we will see how to refine our practice, increase it’s power through becoming more subtle, and deeply strengthen in the process. Through this approach, students will come to feel the freedom associated with unraveling the energetic and physical blockages of the body, which results in abiding joy and ease. This variety of practice is beneficial for all levels of practitioners.

Deepen your practice through breath, chanting and gratitude

For most people the first meeting with yoga is usually a physical experience, something we move towards through our bodies. However, the traditional goal of yoga has for thousands of years been to increase people’s ability to be more present in the world through the help of a calmer mind.

To practice yoga is to observe ourselves as we are in a given moment without demands or expectations. It’s described in the yogic texts that even though consistency and regularity are important for the understanding of yoga, how we approach the different techniques on the mat will be equally important.

Finding the Softness in Your Practice:Asana, Pranayama, Chanting and Nutrition

Practice – Although yoga might be a physical practice where we challenge our bodies, it has always been a useful tool for increasing awareness and helping the mind to settle.
To practice yoga is to feel and observe ourselves as we are in the given moment without pressure and expectations. Through daily morning practice of asana and pranayama combined with inspiring afternoon discussions based on the philosophy of Yoga Sutras, we will explore how yoga can be soft and stable at the same time. Patanjali, the author of yoga sutras, would call this “Sthira sukham asanam” meaning to be in the posture with full support, feeling centered and without stress.
