50-hour Study Immersion for Teachers

January 24 – 31, 2015

with Simon Low and Eija Tervonen

About the Retreat

This 50-hour study immersion is part of The Yoga Academy’s Ongoing Teacher Training programme, which includes study immersions of varying length for yoga teachers for their ongoing professional development. Each module in this programme is built around a specific subject matter and can be taken independently as a focused study immersion into the subject. Teachers with an existing Yoga Alliance (US) 200-hour certificate can collect hours from each immersion towards formal certification, via The Yoga Academy, at the 500-hour level with the Yoga Alliance. Hours can also be collected towards maintaining a current 200-hour or 500-hour registration with the Yoga Alliance. Additionally, at The Yoga Academy’s discretion, each study immersion is also open to non-teachers.

Join the Yoga Academy faculty and guest teacher Terry McCarthy for a study immersion into upgrading your knowledge of key teaching directions, which will re-inspire your own practice and embodyment of asana and pranayama and enthuse, inform and add variety to your teaching, with a particular focus on Yin and Restorative Yoga. Under the guidance of our expert guest teacher Terry McCarthy, specialist in Muscle Restoration Therapy, you will learn the skill to ‘see’ your students, being able to look at your students as they stand still and/or make simple movements that reveal fascial holding patterns and habitual tendencies of moving. You will learn how to address these through the modality of asana, assisted stretch and manual fascial reintegration, which will add a therapeutic healing dimension to your studies on this immersion.

About the Teacher

Simon Low

Simoin-LowSimon Low, BWY and Yoga Alliance (E-RYT 500) teacher, is the Principal of The Yoga Academy offering foundational and continuing education to yoga teachers and students in the UK and internationally. After a career in the music industry based out of London and New York, Simon undertook training as yoga teacher and therapist 24 years ago with renowned yoga teacher, therapist and author Dr. Larry Payne at Samata International in Los Angeles, California. These studies were augmented by Simon’s training in macrobiotics, bodywork and psycho-spiritual enquiry. Simon’s foundational teachings are informed by the teachings of Sri T Krishnamacharya and his primary students. Simon’s current teachings reflect his continued training and on-going studies with international teachers in many forms of Hatha and Classical yoga, traditional Chinese and eastern medicine, Chi Kung, ancient and contemporary healing methodologies, centred-movement, psychology and physical therapy. Simon is an ongoing student of A.H. Almaas’ Ridhwan School, but his primary teacher lives within himself, a relationship he continues to cultivate with the help and guidance of his current teachers and practice. He inspires others to cultivate the same relationship within themselves and their own yoga practices.

Following many years of teaching in the UK, Simon co-founded Triyoga in London, where he was Director of Yoga until 2003, since which time he has concentrated on teacher training at The Yoga Academy and on leading study intensives, workshops and rejuvenating yoga retreats around the world. Over the years, Simon has developed a unique and personal teaching style and now practices and teaches a harmonious combination of Yin and Yang Yoga. Not a set system but a balanced approach that can inform and enrich all styles of yoga, Yin and Yang Yoga offers fresh vitality to yoga practice, kindness and respect to the human form, transformative breathing practices, and for the mind – the space for peace and tranquillity.

In 2007, Simon released his now very popular DVD “Yin and Yang Yoga” and will release a Yin Yoga App in 2014.

Terry McCarthy

Terry McCarthyTerry McCarthy was trained in Dorn Therapy by Barbara Simon, who studied under Dieter Dorn himself in Germany. As well as being a Dorn Therapist, Terry also uses a range of other natural hands-on therapies. He is the originator of Muscle Restoration Therapy, perfected through giving thousands of treatments. When we strain and injure ourselves, we ignore and over-ride the ‘factory settings’ we were born with that dictate correct postural, growth and muscular functions. This leads to back, neck and joint pain. Using just one finger, Terry restores muscles to their ‘factory settings’ to give safe, gentle relief from pain .This allows the body to heal itself. Massage is not a part of the treatment. There is also no manipulation, cracking or crunching.

Terry gives treatments, introductory classes and workshops in a number of countries.

Testimonials

Michelle Killian

The comprehensive course material and delivery was a huge step up from my YTTC200. I did my initial training elsewhere, but Simon and Eija made sure I understood the basics from their own YTTC course and got me up to speed alongside their existing Yoga Academy students. I have benefitted hugely from their knowledge and passion for anatomy and how to practice safely, which has brought an added dimension to my classes.
∼ Samantha Aikenhead, yoga teacher, UK, 50-hour study immersion June 2014

Michelle KillianFrom Simon’s inspiring and thought provoking led classes, through Eija’s anatomically detailed tuition and adjustments, I feel as if I have attended a 1-1 Masterclass in Yoga, but with the added benefit of being able to further enhance my knowledge base, by tapping into the experiences of my fellow Yoga teachers from around the world with whom I shared the course. Only now, a few weeks since the training ended, I am beginning to fully appreciate how deeply my time on this study immersion will affect my own practice and ultimately that of my students, as they will, by natural extension, be joint beneficiaries of my time spent on this training. Thank you Simon, Eija and fellow students for a truly humbling and memorable experience.
∼ Adrian Demoulpied, Sivananda Yoga teacher, Wales, 50-hour study immersion June 2014

Afsaneh SaghariI am a yoga teacher and have travelled around the world for yoga retreats. In my last journey in January 2014, I went to Samahita Retreat for a yoga holiday with Simon Low. I got rid of pains that had been caused by an old back injury in yoga. The results were magnificent and I could not believe it. In summer 2014, I went to Turkey to do a 50-hour study immersion with Simon and his faculty, and the results exceeded my experiences from various health farms in India. I was able to reach my desirable weight, my asanas improved a great deal, my teaching skills improved, and I felt less tired and more energetic. I run my own studio in Iran and now come to Simon and his faculty to improve my teaching skills.
∼ Afsaneh Saghari, yoga teacher, Teheran, Iran 50-hour study immersion June 2014

Michelle KillianOverwhelming, as it may seem initially, Simon and Eija draw students into a space of trust and provide every manner of support for their learning. This includes a range of teaching methodologies as well as personal guidance and access each day of the course. Their emphasis on a ‘sanga’, or community, helped foster genuine kinship between students.
