About the Retreat

This week is the launch of a series of The Yoga Academy’s continuing education modules for existing teachers with two aims in mind: First, by completing the combination of optional and compulsory modules, existing Yoga Alliance® 200-hour teachers wishing to upgrade to the 500-hour level can collect the required number of hours towards certification, by The Yoga Academy, at the Yoga Alliance®’s 500-hour level. Second, this week is also open as an individual, stand-alone study intensive to all teachers of yoga to support their ongoing professional development, but who are not necessarily seeking a certification at the 500-hour level. All students will, however, receive a 50-hour certificate of completion from The Yoga Academy.

Teachers wishing to apply for the 500-hour upgrade course need to have an existing 200-hour certificate from either The Yoga Academy or another Yoga Alliance certified school, proof of which needs to be made available to us. Hours from this training can only be collected towards a 500-hour certificate from The Yoga Academy; they are not eligible towards 500-hour certification by another school. This is in compliance with the Yoga Alliance®’s requirements and serves to ensure the integrity and continuity of The Yoga Academy’s exacting standards.

This week’s training module, which is one of the optional modules, offers an awakening journey into the broad spectrum of Yin and Yang Yoga, infused with complementary ancient and contemporary philosophy, pranayama and meditation.

  • re-visiting traditional asana alignment with new awareness 
  • re-visiting your ‘core’ as a the central axis of balance
  • applied anatomical teachings toward safe and effective practice
  • ancestral and primal developmental influences
  • embryological patterning
  • breathwork for deep relaxation and cellular wellness
  • mantra for concentration and inspiration
  • insight, wisdom and awareness through meditation
  • enriching your experience and teaching of restorative practices
  • audio-visual lecture presentations and supporting hand-outs

All props will be provided by Samahita Retreat other than a personal yoga mat and a personal eye bag, which you are required to bring and always use. New yoga mats and eye bags can be purchased at the Samahita retail store.

It is The Yoga Academy’s established policy to keep class sizes to a level that promotes optimal practical experience, ensures personal attention and guidance and helps to maintain an intimate and effective community. The maximum group size for this training module is 26 students.

Simon Low

Simoin-LowSimon Low, BWY and Yoga Alliance (E-RYT 500) teacher, is the Principal of The Yoga Academy offering foundational and continuing education to yoga teachers and students in the UK and internationally. After a career in the music industry based out of London and New York, Simon undertook training as yoga teacher and therapist 24 years ago with renowned yoga teacher, therapist and author Dr. Larry Payne at Samata International in Los Angeles, California. These studies were augmented by Simon's training in macrobiotics, bodywork and psycho-spiritual enquiry. Simon's foundational teachings are informed by the teachings of Sri T Krishnamacharya and his primary students. Simon's current teachings reflect his continued training and on-going studies with international teachers in many forms of Hatha and Classical yoga, traditional Chinese and eastern medicine, Chi Kung, ancient and contemporary healing methodologies, centred-movement, psychology and physical therapy. Simon is an ongoing student of A.H. Almaas' Ridhwan School, but his primary teacher lives within himself, a relationship he continues to cultivate with the help and guidance of his current teachers and practice. He inspires others to cultivate the same relationship within themselves and their own yoga practices.

Following many years of teaching in the UK, Simon co-founded Triyoga in London, where he was Director of Yoga until 2003, since which time he has concentrated on teacher training at The Yoga Academy and on leading study intensives, workshops and rejuvenating yoga retreats around the world. Over the years, Simon has developed a unique and personal teaching style and now practices and teaches a harmonious combination of Yin and Yang Yoga. Not a set system but a balanced approach that can inform and enrich all styles of yoga, Yin and Yang Yoga offers fresh vitality to yoga practice, kindness and respect to the human form, transformative breathing practices, and for the mind - the space for peace and tranquillity.

In 2007, Simon released his now very popular DVD "Yin and Yang Yoga" and will release a Yin Yoga App in 2013.

Eija Tervonen

Eija TervonenAfter an introduction to yoga through the dynamic practice of Astanga Vinyasa yoga in 1997, Eija began an in-depth exploration into yoga practice and eventually teaching, first completing teacher training at foundation, intermediate, pregnancy and yoga therapy levels with the Cairns Yoga Academy in Australia. Eija is now also qualified in Iyengar Yoga, and has completed Advanced Yoga Studies with Donna Farhi, has studied in depth with Tias Little, Aadil Palkhivala, Julie Gudmestad and Simon Low, and is certified in Relax & Restore® Yoga by Judith Lasater.

Eija now teaches internationally alongside Simon Low for The Yoga Academy and continues her study of yoga, somatic awareness, movement and healing modalities, with a special interest in the Feldenkrais method.

Also a professional translator and reviser with a former career in corporate communication in the banking and oil industries, Eija has translated and edited, into her native Finnish, works by BKS Iyengar, John Scott, Petri Räisänen, Louise Grime, Donna Farhi and Maya Fiennes as well as the British Medical Association’s comprehensive book about back care. With a keen interest in yoga for therapeutic applications, Eija is dedicated to safe, skilful and effective, anatomically conscious teaching and practice. Eija offers competent, individually tailored and informed guidance and support to students throughout this training.

Students registering to study towards their 500-hour certification are subject to a certification and administration fee of GBP 250, payable to The Yoga Academy upon registering to the first module. You can send a cheque, pay by PayPal or effect a bank transfer. Instructions will be given to you upon confirmation of your place on your first module. This fee is nonrefundable if student decides to withdraw from the training programme.

Deposit and payment

An initial deposit of EUR 750 (50% of the shared-accommodation price) is required upon acceptance irrespective of the accommodation option. The deposit confirms your place on the module. The remaining balance, including your semi-private or single room supplement, if applicable, is to be made by 18 December 2013.

Cancellation policy

  • The deposit is non-refundable.
  • Cancellations received within 14 – 29 days to the module start date : 75% of the module rate is non-refundable.
  • Cancellations received within 13 days to the module start date: full payment is non-refundable.
  • If the cancellation occurs before 13 days of the module start date, your non-refundable portion can be kept as credit for a similar future Yoga Academy teacher training module at Samahita Retreat only, less an administrative fee of EUR 50.
  • Any cancellations within 13 days or less are completely non-refundable and non-transferable.

Deluxe One Bedroom Suite

We only have two deluxe one bedroom suites located in our most private building closest to the sea. They have a private bedroom, living room, fully equipped kitchen, generous bathroom and an extra large balcony. Both suites offer a modern open living room with sofa bed, LCD TV, working desk and DVD/ iPod Stereo. They are perfect for a family or couple. The additional rate is a flat rate based on the room and is added on to the total rate package whether a single individual, couple or family.
